HEIC (High-Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads running iOS 11 or later. It uses HEVC compression to roughly halve the storage footprint of an equivalent JPG, but outside the Apple ecosystem support is patchy, and HEIC is a poor choice when you need to edit, composite, or add transparency to an image. How to use it
