User Guide

How to use this tool

The Square Image Maker turns any rectangular photo into a perfect 1:1 canvas — the required aspect ratio for Instagram feed posts, Facebook profile pictures, LinkedIn company logos and product grids. Two modes cover every use case: Fit (letterbox) and Fill (center-crop).

How to use it

Drop an image onto the upload zone. Choose a background color for the letterboxed regions (Fit mode) or leave it as white. Toggle between Fit and Fill mode to see which composition works better for the subject.

Fit mode places the whole image inside the square canvas and fills the excess with your chosen color — nothing is cropped. Fill mode scales the image up until it covers the whole square and center-crops the overflow — no letterboxing but content near the edges is lost.

  • Fit mode preserves the entire image with color padding
  • Fill mode covers the square with a center-crop
  • Custom padding color (Fit mode only)
  • Automatic maximum-side canvas sizing

Choosing Fit vs Fill

Fit is safest when the composition is delicate — landscapes with important detail near the corners, group photos, or full-body portraits. The letterbox reads as intentional and matches recent Instagram design trends.

Fill produces a more immersive result but requires that your subject sits within the middle third of the source frame. It is the default choice for close-up portraits and hero product photography.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I blur the padding?

A blurred copy of the image as background creates the most natural look for tall/wide photos.

Will my image be stretched?

No — we add padding rather than distorting aspect ratio.

Does it crop or pad the image?

You choose. Crop mode fills the square by trimming edges, while pad mode adds whitespace (blurred or solid) to preserve the entire image.

What background color is used for padding?

You can select white, black, a custom color, or a blurred version of the image itself as the padding background.

What size should the square be?

Common sizes are 1080×1080 for Instagram, 800×800 for e-commerce, and 500×500 for thumbnails. You can enter any custom size.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes. This tool is completely free with no sign-up, no watermarks, and no daily limits. All processing runs locally in your browser.

What size will the output be?

The tool uses the longer edge of your source image as the square side, preserving maximum resolution.

Can I upload panoramic images?

Yes, but the letterboxing (Fit mode) will be extreme. Consider cropping first for better composition.
